ILL and ESRF instruments for the project

The instruments of the two Grenoble facilities that fit the questions, read on their own pages on 3 November 2026, with what each is best at here and which proposal uses it. Values the pages did not give are marked "nv" and are to be confirmed with the instrument's contact. Other facilities (PSI, ISIS, MLZ, ALBA, SESAME, the Spanish and Moroccan routes) come after the first design.

ILL · Institut Laue-Langevin (neutrons)

Spain is a Scientific Member (since 1987); Morocco is not. At least two-thirds of the proposers must come from member countries (ILL co-proposers do not count); otherwise only Director's Discretionary Time (5 % of beam time). Next standard deadline: 15 February 2027; second round in September. Reactor: a shutdown from November 2026 to March 2027; cycle 202 runs 23 March – 24 May 2027, later 2027 cycles not yet published.

ESRF · European Synchrotron (EBS, X-rays)

Spain is a member (4 %); Morocco is neither member nor associate: non-member groups get time through collaboration with member-country groups. Deadlines 1 March and 10 September, 17:00 CET; next 1 March 2027 (beam August 2027 – February 2028). A BAG needs a PI from a member country and at least three groups. 2027 schedule approved: 5328 h of user mode in five runs. ID11 accepts no proposals (pause from March 2027).

Joint routes

No current scheme takes one combined X-ray + neutron proposal for materials work: the practical route is separate ILL and ESRF proposals that cite each other. The Grenoble Battery Hub (ESRF, ILL, CEA, 2021) offers long-term ILL projects across several instruments; the ESRF European Battery Hub (EuBat, led by CEA) admits new partners after its pilot phase. Both worth a letter once P1 and P3 are drafted: the Hub was made for battery materials, and the cathode strand fits it best.
