Career
Thirty-eight years at the University of the Basque Country, in the same faculty and, since 2011, the same course.
I graduated in physics at the University of the Basque Country in 1988, in the solid-state physics track, and obtained my doctorate there in 1994 with a thesis on solid-solid structural phase transitions studied by adiabatic calorimetry and vibrational spectroscopy. My whole academic career has been at this university: research collaborator and doctoral fellow from 1988, assistant professor from 1992, tenured associate professor (Profesor Titular) from 1997, and Full Professor of Physics since 2 November 2020, in the area of Applied Physics with the profile of thermodynamics and statistical physics, bilingual Basque and Spanish.
My early research was the physics of structural phase transitions in ferroic and related crystals and in simple, double and triple perovskites, combining adiabatic calorimetry with Raman, infrared, X-ray and neutron diffraction on single crystals and powders, in collaboration with international groups and with the large neutron and synchrotron facilities in Europe. That work established my expertise in crystallographic mode analysis and in structure–property relations in complex oxides, and produced five doctoral theses. Over the last decade my activity has moved towards the high-temperature thermophysical and infrared radiative behaviour of materials for energy, in the Thermomat group, which I co-lead: the development and upgrade of the group’s HAIRL emissometer and the methodology for high-accuracy, angle-resolved emissivity measurements, with applications to concentrated solar power, fusion materials, advanced steels and coated surfaces, in close collaboration with CIC Energigune, Tecnalia, Petronor, ArcelorMittal and ESS Bilbao among others.
In teaching, I introduced thermodynamics and its neighbouring subjects in Basque at this university and prepared the first complete set of materials for it, including translations of the core textbooks and, later, university-level textbooks of my own. Since 2011 my teaching has been one course, Termodinamika eta Fisika Estatistikoa, and the bachelor’s theses that grow out of it.
